Guest teacherNikki Mirghafori has studied samatha and vipassana under the supervision of Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw, who authorized her to teach both.  She is a teacher-in-training at Spirit Rock Meditation Center as well as Stanford's Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education.  She has a Ph.D. in computer science from UC Berkeley and has had an active career as a research scientist. 

Abstract:
This session will be a mix of lecture, guided meditation, interactive dialogue (both in pairs and the whole group), and Q/A.  Please come prepared not just to listen, but also to practice and discuss.   The topics we will touch on:
- Intention for this practice
- Why concentration
- What is meditative absorption (jhana)
- Why and why not practice jhanas
- Preparatory practices
- Instructions for breath meditation
- Working with common obstacles
- Jhanic factors, the first jhana, and beyond
